The Remarkable Story Of OSI Group

The OSI Group is among the biggest providers of food on the globe. The company employs 20,000 people at 65 facilities in 17 nations. Despite the incredible size of the company, OSI group is still a developing force in the continuously evolving story of the present-day, globalized economy.

Even though OSI group is a mammoth on the world stage now, the company had humble beginnings. At the beginning of the 1900s, Otto Kolschowsky was apart of the massive German-immigrant group in Chicago, Illinois. The thriving city was a hub of industry for the United States, and viewed as a starting position for immigrants who wanted to head towards the west to create farms on the plains.

In 1909, Kolschowsky opened a tiny meat market, as well as a butcher shop, to service his community. At the conclusion of World War One, Kolschowsky had grown into the wholesale aspect of the business; and in 1928, the business’s name changed to Otto and Sons.

Decades after being rebranded, Otto and Sons maintained being a thriving local business. Even in World War Two’s aftermath, Otto and Sons was still stable and succeeding.

During the remarkable economic expansion which started towards the late 1940s, Otto and Sons would soon find itself on a clear path to unthinkable prosperity. The beginning of this journey was when Ray Kroc, founder of McDonald’s, made an agreement with Otto and Sons. The agreement entailed that Otto and Sons were to be the first provider of ground beef to McDonald’s. This ultimately meant that the bigger McDonald’s got, the larger Otto and Sons would become.

For two decades after partnering with McDonald’s, the change from regional ground beef supplier Otto and Sons to worldwide corporation OSI group took place.

In 1973, then still known as Otto and Sons, the business built first plant dedicated to the product line of McDonald’s. The aspects of the business that weren’t connected to McDonald’s were consolidated into the Glenmark Brand, which continued to service the nearby restaurant and retail markets.

In 1975, Otto and Sons became OSI industries, and in the 80s and 90s, the company would begin a massive global expansion.

Today, the company that came from such humble beginnings is still a leading organization on the world stage, and likely isn’t going to stop anytime soon.
